Reduce, reuse, RECYCLE

This week’s post is all about Bowling Green’s Recycling Center.

The Recycling Center was started in 1978 as a volunteer effort by the local Jaycees. Initially, it was a bit low-tech — and by low-tech I mean they crushed cans by smashing them with a cement block — but today it processes 6 million pounds of recyclables a year.
How they did it back in the day!
How they did it back in the day!
  • The first video is a behind the scenes look at the Recycling Center, and how your plastic water bottles, aluminum cans and newspapers get turned into huge bails ready to be shipped off to market.

  • The second video deals with a recyclable that’s a real pain in the glass …

There’s not much of a market for glass anymore, leaving recycling centers around the county struggling to unload the stuff. Currently the Bowling Green Recycling Center still accepts glass — although it must be brought into the 24-hour drop-off (no curbside pick-up).

For now at least there’s a plan in place, but as for the future, well, that’s anyone’s guess.

  • What are the Center’s plans for the future?

Obviously they’ve come a log way from smashing cans with a cement block … but what’s next? Here’s a clue — it’s got something to do with that giant red building that’s gone up next to the 24-hour drop-off center …

Be sure to check back next week to see what’s going green in BG.
    Until then,

Very nice. The videos are pretty well done, and definitely informative. I had not seen how things work there before. One thing–need to address the issue of where they get their operating money now. ****
